Sehr langsam (Live at Philharmonie, Berlin, 1993) STOP Berliner Philharmoniker, Claudio Abbado STOP It is deeply sad to read this—shocking, even. The position taken by both parties is condemnable for one simple reason that all of us in classical music should remember: we make music for others — to give it, to pass it on. STOP Yes, artistic standards must be exceptionally high, and the musicians’ seating and acoustic comfort are essential. But these considerations should not go so far as to result in a concert being cancelled. It is shameful to forget that we do not make music for ourselves, but for the people who come to hear it — and for whom it can change a life. STOP I am certain that among those who will miss Mahler’s Fifth performed by the Berlin Philharmonic and Iván Fischer were young people, older people, and others who might have been profoundly inspired by this concert. They will not have that chance. Ultimately, it is music that suffers from this self-centred decision by both parties. Weniger anzeigen Kommentare Carlitos Anjador STOP The concert wasn’t cancelled, another conductor took over Antworten Bearbeitet Ian Wereland STOP The story is something over nothing. Another conductor was hired and the concert will go ahead. Mahler 5 is one of the most frequently performed symphonies so even if the concert had been cancelled, the audience wouldn’t have to wait long for another performance to come along. As a side note, I have read that the seating arrangement required by Ivan was the one preferred by Mahler himself. Antworten Hagen Riverboerg STOP The orchestra is known for being difficult. I know Fischer, a nice and humble gentleman. AND, he is right. Antworten Christian Daniel Antenberger STOP Whether it’s Fischer or the orchestra, I don’t know who’s right in this case. How the seating arrangement of the orchestra affects the sound in the specific acoustic of this Hall, is difficult to discuss theoretically. It must be heard practically in a corresponding seating rehearsal. But I do believe that it is fundamentally the conductor’s job to judge this with his experience in sound, and that the orchestra should trust the conductor in this. It’s certainly possible to discuss this collegially during rehearsals, but if the orchestra fundamentally doesn’t trust the conductor to make the right decision, then it’s better not to work together. Therefore, a consistent and correct decision from both sides.
